Hello Katherine.
I have been asking myself why I feel such a connection with you. Normally, I am usually not impressed or so drawn to another human being..unfortunately. When I met you in Marshall, NC, I knew very little about you. My enthusiasm reminded me that gay people have so few role models and then I realized that I wanted to help you become more visible in the gay community. I imagined middle school kids relating to the fact that a 16 year old lesbian eventually made it in Hollywood. Not that I think "making it" can only come from being famous, but I do think it is important for our (gay) youth to see someone in their community being successful.
I am a returning student ( junior)at The University of North Carolina after 15 years( at 37 years old). Still focused on mental health and psychology, I am working on a degree for drama therapy. As I believe that theater and acting in general can bring about emotional changes. I have witnessed myself when I volunteered to be an actor in a community performance directed by Dr. Richard Greer and his playwright Jules Corriere. I never thought that I would feel comfortable on stage but over the course of the rehearsals and performances, I did. My self confidence rose and I saw what a community could do together, it was powerful.
I am telling you all of this because when I met you I was and still am working on a doc that has to do with some of these issues. As a psychologist, I want to bring about much needed mental heath services to our community but not through a one on one situation, but rather in a community setting. I feel this is the most effective means. Being as I have been through many mental health struggles ( alcoholism, addiction to tobacco and ...) personally and with family members, I feel a connection to help others overcome their fears and insecurities. I would love to be able to chat with you about some of these ideas.
In closing, I would like to ask you if you had any fund raising going on when you are in Harrodsburg, Ky, so close to Lexington? Lexington is my hometown ( race horses, a whole other area!!) and I might be able to make a few contacts and see!? I hope that you are getting good rest and healing.
Ellis
